A study was made of the vascular supply of the bilaminar zone of the meniscus. The purpose was to determine whether the histology of this tissue is such that it could be considered actively erectile. This would, in turn, clarify the role of this tissue in limiting retrusion of the mandible. The vascular patterns and morphology were demonstrated. None of the histologic structures necessary for an erectile type of tissue was found. The results of this study indicate that, because of a lack of an active erectile mechanism, the bilaminar zone of the meniscus does not play a significant role in limiting retrusion of the mandible.
