Microbiologic Comparison of Dental Handpieces 2. Aerosol Decay and Dispersion

W. J. HAUSLER JR. 1 and RICHARD M. MADDEN 1

1 State Hygienic Laboratory and Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health, College of Medicine, and Department of Operative Dentistry, College of Dentistry, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

Data are presented which characterize aerosol generated by the operation of an air turbine handpiece during preparation of a Class II cavity on a mounted tooth previously inoculated with Serratia marcescens. The quantities of bacteria-containing droplet uclei rapidly decrease as the distance from the cutting surface of the tooth increases. The ratio of particles capable of penetrating the alveolar space, however, increases with distance.
