In this studv, 71 young adult, male, New Zealand rabbits were allotted to three groups. Group I, consisting of 10 rabbits, served as a control. In Group II, consisting of 25 rabbits, submaxillary gland ducts were ligated for three dayts, after which the ligation was removed and rabbits were killed at intervals up to 54 days. Group III consisted of 35 rabbits and was identical to Group II, except that the ligation had been maintained for 7 instead of 3 days.
The findings were as follows: Obstruction of the salivary gland duct in the rabbit produces atrophic changes in the associated gland that were well advanced at 3 days.
On removal of obstruction after 3 and 7 days, obstructed glands showed evidence of regeneration. Regeneration began within 1 day after the removal of the obstruction and continued for about at week. It consisted of reappearance of acinar cells, trophochrome cells, and secretory material. Regeneration, as evidenced by mucous secretion, was faster in glands ligated for 3 days than those ligated for 7 days.
After 1 week, the unobstructed ghlands began to form mucoceles in the surrounding connective tissue. As a result, the ducts again were obstructed and atrophic changes reappeared in the gland.
The study showed that the salivary gland of the rabbit is capable of rapid regeneration after acute atrophy.
