The present study was of a basic nature. A test method was utilized for direct measurement of the pH of the cements. Thus, the patterns of change that occur during setting of the different types of cement were established. The difference between the pH of the surface and the internal mass was demonstrated; however, neither the cause nor the significance of the phenomenon could be explained at this time. Future work must include measurements within the cavity preparation at the tooth-cement interface, the effect of manipulative variables, and the determination of pH in vivo.
