By the method outlined, amalgam can be polished with the retention of all the phases. Furthermore, the recommended iodine etch will show, with good contrast, all the phases.
The gray etch-resistant areas have been shown by probe results to consist of Cu and Sn. Also the dark gray areas appearing in the aged amalgam are predominantly Sn. The
2 areas, assumed to be a Sn-Hg phase, have been shown to be a mixture of Sn-Hg and Cu-Hg phases.
