Glycolysis Inhibitors among Organic Phosphorus Compounds

R. S. MANLY 1 and ROBERT PILLARD 1

1 Dental Science Department, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts

Sixty-four organic phosphorus compounds have been studied for their possible influence on glycolysis by micro-organisms in a film prepared from the centrifugate of human saliva. The compounds were phosphates, phosphates, or phosphonates. Three of the active structures contained phosphate, phosphonate, or phosphate as the only functional group. These compounds were di-2-ethyl hexyl phosphate, tri-n-butyl phosphate, and dodecyl phosphonic acid. The active structures possessed carbon to phosphorus ratios of 12-16, whereas similar inactive structures possessed ratios of 10 or less or 21 or more. The two remaining active structures possessed tertiary amine or quaternary groupings which might account for inhibitory action.
