Chronic intoxication in rats with dihydrotachysterol (DHT) produced severe changes in the periodontium which included osteosclerosis, pronounced osteoid formation, bulbous distortion in the shape of the bone, and degeneration of the marrow and the periodontal ligament. Intraperitoneal administration of ferric hydroxide with dextran (Fe-Dex) induced calciphylaxis which reduced the toxic effects of DHT upon the periodontium.
