The frequency and distribution of tooth contact in the intercuspal position during night sleep were investigated, using a miniature radio transmitter to monitor contact. Recurrent periods of tooth contacts occurred. These periods were closely associated with periods of restlessness during which swallowing also occurred. It is suggested that such contacts are closely related to the contacts associated with bruxism.
