It is best to choose Sd for the minimum values of Sm for which Eq. (5) holds. Table 1 gives such values. It turns out that for sagittal angles of chew less than about 78 degrees, the angle required for the mesial slope becomes too steep for practical application. However, a sagittal angle of chew of less than 78 degrees is rarely if ever seen clinically.2-5

Note from Figure 2 that the maximum of Fed gives the value of Fem for which the corresponding angle Sm is a minimum. To find the maximum of Fed, form [See Equation In PDF File] For [See Equation In PDF File] we have [See Equation in PDF File] The values of Sd in the above table satisfy this equation. Manufacturers of artificial teeth should take the results in Table 1 into account when designing the mesial and distal slopes of their teeth.
