Human gingival tissue obtained from gingivectomized patients was freed of all lipid, and the mucopolysaccharides were extracted. Chromatographic and colorimetric analyses suggested the presence of hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfates, and sialic acid. The sialic acid content of gingival tissue amounted to approximately 1.41-1.67 per cent of the total mucopolysaccharide fraction. Possible implications of this finding were considered briefly.
