The Effect of Adrenalectomy and Cortisone Supplementation on Caries Incidence in Caries-susceptible Rats

E. A. SWEENEY 1 and J. H. SHAW 1

1 Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts

Contrary to a previous report, adrenalectomy did not increase the caries susceptibility of our caries-susceptible strain of rat. Animals receiving salt supplementation of the diet and drink demonstrated a trend toward lower scores for third molars only. Intact rats receiving 0.6 mg. cortisone per day exhibited a trend toward higher scores of borderline significance, which was not seen in the adrenalectomized rats also receiving cortisone.
