A study was made of the oxidative activities of enzymatically (i.e., collagenase) separated dog gingival epithelium and connective-tissue components. Cytochrome oxidase activity of separated epithelium was five times greater than that of separated connective tissue. NADH cytochrome c reductase activity of separated epithelium was sixteen times greater than that of separated connective tissue. Evidence was presented for the existence, in gingiva, of endogenous inhibitors of oxidative metabolism. Preliminary experiments with human gingival preparations also provided evidence for the existence of endogenous inhibitors of oxidative metabolism.
