This article describes the use of an original apparatus and methods for studying metabolic changes within and on the food and tooth sides of dental plaque (microcosm). Changes in pH are reported which occurred following the introduction of distilled water, saliva, sugars, lemon juice, and chewing-gum-stimulated saliva on one or both sides of the microbial masses.
