Samples of maternal blood, cord blood, and whole placental tissues were analyzed for fluoride. The fluoride intake from drinking water of all investigated cases varied between 0.06 ppm F up to 0.9 ppm. F. One group of women received daily supplemental sodium fluoride tablets. The results suggest that when the fluoride intake is low, fluoride freely passes through the placenta, but when the fluoride intake is high, the placenta plays a regulatory role and protects the fetus from excess.
