The teratogenic effect of the steroid nucleus was studied. Cholesterol (15 mg.) injected daily into female white rats from the 8th through the 14th day of pregnancy produced palatal abnormalities in a high percentage (56.8 per cent) of animals treated. A corresponding increase in adrenal weights and decrease in body weight were noted in the injected group.
Histological study of the heads of the embryos confirmed the gross observation of cleft palate in the offspring. It was observed that in some cases there appeared to be an epithelial bridge between the palatine shelves, while in others there was a deficiency of tissue.
