The Appearance of Administered Proteins in Saliva

FRED F. TUNG 1 and ARNOLD H. SCHEIN 1

1 Department of Biochemistry, University of Vermont, College of Medicine, Burlington, Vermont

To gain some idea of the permeability of the salivary glands to blood proteins, radioactive iodine-labeled proteins were administered intravenously to man and rabbits. Protein-bound radioactive iodine was found in the saliva. Similarly, administration of unlabeled foreign proteins to rabbits resulted in the appearance of these proteins in saliva, as determined by immunological techniques.
