To gain some idea of the permeability of the salivary glands to blood proteins, radioactive iodine-labeled proteins were administered intravenously to man and rabbits. Protein-bound radioactive iodine was found in the saliva. Similarly, administration of unlabeled foreign proteins to rabbits resulted in the appearance of these proteins in saliva, as determined by immunological techniques.
