The use of a stannous fluoride prophylaxis paste significantly reduced intact enamel solubility in vitro. A 10 per cent stannous fluoride topical application was found to be more effective than the prophylaxis paste under similar treatment conditions. The use of the fluoride paste in its present formulation was considered inadvisable owing to probable adverse tissue reactions as well as possible demineralization of surface enamel.
