Two experiments were described in which the effects of a silicone oil and tap water on the teeth of caries-susceptible rats were sought. When the oil was applied topically by daily toothbrushing, no effect was seen. The same was true when the teeth were brushed with tap water in place of the oil. When the silicone oil was added to the cariogenic diet at 10 per cent and 20 per cent levels, a significant increase in caries and an excellent dose response were seen.
