A base-line study was undertaken to determine the range in normal animals and to assess the variables age, sex, and time. The pouch epithelium was found to be negative with respect to the blood stream, and varied between 30-70 mv. Time and sex did not affect the measurements, whereas older animals showed more variation and a significant difference between the right and the left pouch. Isolated pouches were suspended in a specially constructed lucite chamber with a potential probe at each surface. These measurements averaged 15 mv. less than those in the intact pouch.
