Continuous in Vivo Potentiometric Analysis in Tongue Tissue

JOEL WISOTZKY 1

1 Department of Dental Medicine Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, Cleveland, Ohio

This paper has described an in vivo potentiometric technique that permits a continual visualization of the fate of a minute quantity of an oxidizing or reducing substance that has been introduced via a platinum-loop electrode into a pinpoint area of tongue tissue. The technique demonstrates that (1) an active process of peroxide removal or neutralization exists in tongue; (2) some of the hydrogen peroxide-removing capabilities depend on an intact circulation; (3) most of the neutralizing activity is destroyed by boiling.
