Vascular Architecture of the Human Adult Mandible

WALTER CASTELLI 1

1 Department of Anatomy, University of Concepción School of Dentistry, Chile

The origin and disposition of the arterial vessels in the adult human mandible were studied. The most important findings were (a) the arterial vessels of the condyloid process arise from the vascular system of the temporomandibular joint capsule and from the lateral pterygoid muscle; (b) the vessels in the coronoid process come exclusively from those of the temporalis muscle; (c) the angle of the mandible is supplied by vessels coming from the inferior alveolar artery and from the muscles attached to it; and (d) the inferior border of the mandible receives its largest supply from the inferior alveolar artery.

The disposition and characteristics of the capillary vessels in the different areas of the mandible were also studied. Special emphasis was placed on the study of the venous vascular arrangement in the interalveolar walls.
