Using a standardized experimental schedule (a basal purified diet, 35-day experimental period, and rats caged singly) which produces only pit-and-fissure caries in the NMRI-D rat, daily intubation of phosphate buffer, in amounts equivalent to that received on a diet supplemented with 1.5 and 3.0 per cent Na2HPO4, showed no detectable cariostatic activity.
