Electron Microscopy of Intracellular Mineralization of Oral Filamentous Microörganisms in Vitro

ICHIRO TAKAZOE 1, YOSHIAKI KURAHASHI 1, and SHOSABURO TAKUMA 1

1 Department of Microbiology and Department of Pathology, Tokyo Dental College, Kanda-Misakicho, Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo, Japan

Electron microscopy of experimentally calcified oral filamentous microörganisms that were isolated from the dental plaque was carried out. Some features of the intracellular mineralization were illustrated. The intracellular mineralization seemed to occur independent of the formation of intermicrobial substance and its mineralization. Hydroxyapatite—as a component of the intracellular mineral deposits—was demonstrated by the limited-area electron diffraction method.
