Periodontal Lesions in Hypercitricemia: Effect of Adrenal Cortical Hormones on the Blood Citric Acid Level and the Periodontal Tissues

A. TSUNEMITSU 1, L. S. FOSDICK 1, and A. C. W. HUTCHINSON 1

1 Department of Chemistry, Northwestern University Dental School, Chicago, Illinois

In scorbutic guinea pigs, the citric acid content in the blood was significantly increased. This scorbutic hypercitricemia was prevented by cortisone administration. Administration of desoxycorticosterone (DOC) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) increased the hypercitricemia caused by scurvy. Under these hypercitricemic conditions, hemorrhage, collagenous degeneration, osteoporosis, and absence of new bone formation were observed in periodontal tissues. These histologic changes were most severe in DOC-treated scorbutic guinea pigs. But periodontal pocket formation and marked inflammatory infiltration into the gingival tissues could not be found.
