Action of Trace Elements on the Metabolism of Fluoride

WOLFGANG BÜTTNER 1

1 Institut für Ernährungswissenschaft, Justus Liebig-Universität, Giessen, Germany

According to the results of several studies, interactions occur between various trace elements and fluorine, thus influencing the dental caries experience in rodents. A possible explanation for these effects is the occurrence of changes in fluoride metabolism due to simultaneous ingestion of other trace elements. Therefore, the effect on fluoride retention in the rat of the trace elements molybdenum, vanadium, manganese, and selenium, alone or in combination with fluorine, was studied. The results of the investigation indicate that none of these trace elements influences the utilization and absorption of fluoride, since no significant changes in fluoride retention were observed.
