The subject was reviewed in the light of the history of epidemiology in general and dental epidemiology in particular. The role played by WHO in the establishment of an internationally recognized system of classification of diseases and the elaboration of standards in recording and reporting health statistics were stressed; the development of a uniform dental epidemiology must proceed along similar lines. F.D.I., in collaboration with WHO, is assuming the responsibility of fitting dental epidemiology into the general pattern of epidemiologic effort toward the assessment of mass diseases and the ultimate improvement of public health.
