Effect of Inflammation in the Absence of Proliferation on the Oxygen Consumption of Gingival Tissue

J. H. MANHOLD 1 and A. R. VOLPE 1

1 Department of Pathology and Oral Diagnosis, Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry, Jersey City, New Jersey

The oxygen consumption of inflamed tissue was found both to increase and to decrease, depending on the amount of inflammation present. Such results led to postulation that inflammation and repair actually encompass three distinct phases from the standpoint of oxygen utilization: (1) a degenerative tissue phase of low oxygen utilization associated with a period of heavy inflammatory activity (with its accompanying exudate and degenerative changes); (2) a pre-proliferative tissue phase of high oxygen utilization associated with a period of light inflammatory activity but little to no tissue proliferation; and (3) a proliferative tissue phase of high oxygen utilization associated with tissue repair (proliferative) activity.
