The purpose of this study was to determine whether a calcifiable, cell-free extract could be prepared from a micro-organism known to form intracellular calcium hydroxyapatite. The objective was accomplished by subjecting the cells to an acetic acid extraction with recovery of the extract by water dialysis. The cell-free extract was suspended in calcifying solution for 10 days. X-ray diffraction revealed that the extract had acquired calcium hydroxyapatite. Freeze-dried extract failed to induce hydroxyapatite formation.
