Comparison of Dental Caries Activity in Strains of Laboratory Rats

JAMES H. SHAW 1, DERRICK GRIFFITHS 1, and DAVID H. WOLLMAN 1

1 Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts

The caries activities of 14 strains of laboratory rats have been studied over the past decade under closely controlled and highly cariogenic environmental conditions. Three strains of caries-susceptible rats and 2 strains of caries-resistant rats have been intensively studied and managed by careful breeding procedures to develop high predictability with respect to the phenotypic expression of experimental dental caries. An additional 9 strains have been studied on a survey basis to determine whether they had any unique potential in the study of dental caries. Of these, 5 strains had relatively high caries activities, and the remaining 4 had relatively low caries activities.
