From longitudinal data, the combined mesiodistal crown diameters of tooth groups in the deciduous and permanent dentitions were determined (di1 + di2, I1 +I2, and dc + dm1 + dm2, C + Pm1 + Pm2).
The space demands of the permanent central and lateral incisors relative to the size of their deciduous predecessors differed markedly among children. Similarly, the space that became available during the replacement of the deciduous canines and molars by their permanent successors contributed in varying degrees to the alignment of the teeth in the permanent dentition.
