Spectroscopic Studies on Human Saliva Parts I and II

Experiments were designed to identify the component in saliva that gave an infrared absorbance maximum at 12 µ. This factor was found to be dialyzable, water-soluble, and essentially insoluble in ether and benzene. It showed characteristics of an inorganic base. On the basis of its chemical properties and infrared spectrum, the component was identified as bicarbonate. The relation of the infrared characteristics of various salivary fluids to their bicarbonate content was discussed.
