Pulp Testing by Determination of Fusion Frequency

D. Y. BURRILL 1

1 Northwestern University Dental School, Chicago, Illinois

A method of testing the dental pulp by determination of fusion frequency was studied.

Determination of pulp normality or pulp inflammation by gross inspection of the bare pulp was found practical.

Every pulp exposed by caries or by previous cavity preparation was found to be inflamed or worse.

Where the pulp in one tooth is found to have a fusion frequency of two or three impulses per second and that in a comparable normal tooth in the same mouth is found to have a fusion frequency two or more impulses per second higher, the pulp in the first tooth is probably inflamed.

A finding of a high fusion frequency does not mean that the pulp is normal. A possible explanation for this discrepancy was suggested.
