Evidence was presented of the interaction of NaF and synthetic apatite over a range of fluoride concentrations of 103 at different pH levels ranging from pH 5 to pH 9.
It was found that the higher the concentration of NaF, the greater was the amount of the phosphate liberated in the solution. The lower the pH, the greater was the interaction of fluoride ion with synthetic apatite.
Low concentrations of NaF at the levels of 1.6 x 104 to 1.6x 103 (3-30 ppm) afforded some protection to the apatite from acid action, especially at pH 5.
Comparisons of the caries-reducing effects of fluoride ions must take the pH of the medium into account.
