Personality Correlates of Periodontal Disease

ERNEST G. BAKER 1, G. HAMILTON CROOK 1, and ELSBETH D. SCHWABACHER 1

1 School of Dentistry, University of California

Sixty-two psychiatric patients and 40 non-patients were given a thorough oral examination to evaluate the amount of periodontal disease present. They were also given a diagnostic personality inventory (MMPI) and were rated on thirty-five objective, personal history, and personality variables. The data were explored to investigate the relationships between periodontal disease and personality factors.

The results indicate a positive relationship between periodontal pathology and age, marital adjustment, broken home, somatization, the MMPI hysteria scale, and a number of other variables.

It is concluded that certain personality factors, or types of adjustment, tend to be associated with periodontal disease and that further exploration of these relationships is desirable.
