Study of Bacteriophage Types and Antibiotic Resistance of Staphylococci Isolated from Dental Students and Faculty Members

HOLMES T. KNIGHTON 1

1 Departments of Dental Research and Microbiology, Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia

Coagulase-positive staphylococci were isolated from nasal areas of 42.3 per cent of 355 dental students and faculty members. The incidence of penicillin-resistant, coagulase-positive staphylococci for the same group was 17.5 per cent.

There was no evidence of a statistically significant increase in coagulase-positive staphylococci in general or penicillin-resistant strains in particular, in comparing Freshmen and Sophomores with Juniors, Seniors, and faculty members.
