The effect of sodium-N-lauroyl sarcosinate added to a cariogenic diet on dental caries and on the pH on the surface of the teeth has been studied in sialoadenectomized and intact rats.
The addition of this compound to the diet had a somewhat inhibitory effect on dental caries but did not affect the pH on the tooth surface.
No bacterial growth was obtained on agar plates containing 0.5 per cent SLS when streaked with swabs from human teeth, whereas prolific growth occurred on pure agar.
It is concluded that the cariostatic action of SLS observed in these experiments cannot be attributed to an influence on the pH on the tooth surface but was probably due to its bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal properties.
