There was a decrease in caries resistance in Hunt-Hoppert caries-resistant rats fed the Harvard high-sucrose 700+ diet after removal of the parotid ducts. There was an increase in caries resistance in the same strain of rats after removal of the parotid ducts when the rats were given the coarse-particle HWC diet.
No significant changes in populations of oral lactobacilli and streptococci occurred after excising the parotid ducts and giving the rats the two different cariogenic rations.
