THE EFFECT OF THE TOPICAL APPLICATION OF STANNOUS FLUORIDE ON ENAMEL SOLUBILITY WHEN PRETREATED WITH SODIUM FLUORIDE

JOSEPH C. MUHLER 1 and WOLFGANG BUTTNER 1

1 Department of Biochemistry, Indiana University, Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, Ind.

The addition of 10 per cent irradiated yeast to a stock corn diet significantly increased its cariogenic effect, as well as significantly inhibiting the growth of rats. When the yeast was ashed and then added to the diet, both the cariogenic and the growth-inhibiting effects were lost. The addition of ash obtained from the stock corn diet had no effect on the dental caries experience. Apparently, irradiated yeast contains an unrecognized heat-liable factor(s) which not only inhibits body growth but also acts as a cariogenic agent.
