Oat hulls were substituted at a level of either 5 or 10 per cent in a cariogenic diet, in order to determine their effect on dental caries in the rat. At both levels, the oat hulls significantly reduced the incidence of dental caries. The factor or factors responsible for this anticariogenicity is not known, although it is known not to be fluoride.
