A rampant form of dental caries can now be induced in both golden and albino hamsters by feeding a high-carbohydrate low-fat diet. Starting with albino animals about 20 days old, an experimental period of 35 days will generally be adequate for caries activity to cause cavitation in 10 to 12 molar teeth and to destroy many completely.
