AMINO ACID COMPOSITION OF PROTEINS OF HUMAN DENTIN

HUBERT H. HUGHSTON 1, LEWIS S. EARLE 1, and FRANCIS BINKLEY 1

1 Department of Biochemistry, Emory University, Atlanta, Ga.

The insoluble protein of dentin was found to be a collagen characterized by a high content of glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline; the presence of hydroxylysine and hydroxyproline confirms the classification as a collagen. The discovery of glutamic and aspartic acids in peptides in the acid hydrolysates is novel and may be a clue as to the combination of the collagens in the organic matrix of dentin. The collagen fraction of dentin was found to contain more of the hydroxyaliphatic amino acids, hydroxyproline, and hydroxylysine, and less of the basic amino acids, arginine and lysine, than collagens from other sources.
