Completely salivariadenectomized rats required more time than normal control rats to consume the same quantity of food. Rats with submaxillary and sublingual glands extirpated also spent more time in feeding than controls. Rats with parotid ducts removed took only slightly longer than controls to consume the same amount of food. Apparently, there is an inverse relationship between the amount of saliva, and time required to consume food.
