MODIFICATION OF THE ORGANIC MATRIX OF SOUND DENTIN TO COLLAGENASE-RESISTANT FORMS

W. G. ARMSTRONG 1

1 Institute of Dental Surgery, University of London, Eastman Dental Hospital, London, W. C. 1, England

The organic matrix of sound dentin is readily disintegrated by collagenase, and it has been shown that the presence of free egr-amino and guanidyl groups in the matrix determines susceptibility to attack by the enzyme. It is likely that hydroxy groups are similarly involved.

Modification of the decalcified organic matrix of sound dentin with specific reagents can alter the matrix to collagenase-resistant forms. It is also possible to similarly modify the matrix without preliminary decalcification.

The significance of the results is discussed in relation to the observed collagenase resistance found in carious dentin.
