THE EFFECT OF PILOCARPINE IN SINGLE OR DIVIDED DAILY DOSES ON THE INCIDENCE OF DENTAL CARIES IN THE RAT

JOSEPH C. MUHLER 1 and DAVID BIXLER 1

1 Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.

The same amount of pilocarpine was given to rats either once a day, 3 times a day, or in the diet which was fed ad libitum and the dental caries experience compared to control animals receiving no pilocarpine. The data indicated that all 3 groups receiving the pilocarpine had a significant reduction in dental caries. The anticariogenic effect of pilocarpine does not seem to be related to frequency of ingestion, but instead may be related to differences in the chemical composition of the saliva following pilocarpine administration.
