1 Department of Biochemistry, Medical College and School of Dentistry, University of Alabama, Birmingham, Ala.

1. A semiquantitative method for measuring the rate of in vitro caries was developed. The method needs further refinement before it will be useful for routine work.

2. The effect of fluoride in retarding in vitro decay was measurable by changes in enamel hardness.

3. Intact enamel surfaces were not so obviously protected by fluorides as were ground polished enamel surfaces.
