1. A method for determining salivary tryptophan by microbiologic assay with Leuconostoc mesenteroides in a defined medium is described.
2. The actual tryptophan levels in saliva are believed to be lower than the values previously reported.
3. Statistical evidence shows no correlation between caries incidence as indicated by DMF values and salivary tryptophan levels determined by this method.
