THE RELATION OF SYSTEMIC FLUORIDE AND THYROID GLAND ACTIVITY TO THE INCIDENCE OF DENTAL CARIES IN THE RAT

DAVID BIXLER PH.D.1 and JOSEPH C. MUHLER D.D.S., PH.D.1

1 Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind.

The anticariogenic effect of feeding desiccated thyroid to rats was again confirmed in this study. The synergistic anticariogenic effect of fluoride administered in the drinking water with the effect of feeding desiccated thyroid has been shown to be the result of topical fluoride treatment since the synergistic action of fluoride is not apparent when injected intraperitoneally in rats receiving desiccated thyroid.
