1. A method for simultaneous measurement of pH and lactate content of dental plaque in situ is described.

2. During a 20-minute interval following a 50 per cent sucrose mouth rinse, the increase in per cent lactate paralleled the decrease in pH.

3. All or nearly all of the observed decrease in pH can be accounted for quantitatively by the increase in lactate.
