ACCOMMODATION OF NORMAL AND PATHOLOGIC PULP NERVES

FERNANDO VARGAS F. 1

1 Instituto de Fisiologia y Escuela Dental, Universidad de Concepción, Chile

The response of normal and inflamed dental pulps to exponentially increasing currents was studied. The ohm resistance of teeth was measured at short intervals and a significant decrease of resistance of about 53 per cent of the initial value, which occurs within a few minutes, noted. A linear relationship between threshold and the time-constants of the stimulating currents is described.

Normal dental pulps have high accommodation with a mean slope of 0.16 rheobase per millisecond rb/ms). Pulpitis decreases nerve accommodation significantly (slope 0.048 rb/ms).

The application of the study of accommodation to diagnosis of pulpal lesions is suggested. Due to the linear characteristics of the accommodation curve, only two points need be studied.
