1. Thymine (2, 6-dioxy-5-methylpyrimidine) has been isolated from the cementum of the sperm whale.
2. A very similar pyrimidine has been detected in the dentin, but in much less quantity.
3. An ether-soluble basic pyrimidine has also been detected in the dentin.
4. It would seem likely that these pyrimidines are derived from nucleoproteins in the dental tissues of the sperm whale.
5. The nucleoproteins of the dentinal tubules may contribute to the fluorescence of dentin.
